Maguffin

In fiction. a Maguffin is a contrived plot device that exists only to further the storyline. It can range from the forgettable, such as a proverbial pot of gold, to the ludicrous, such as a scientifically impossible phenomenon in what is supposed to be a work of scientific fiction.
